On October 28, the traditional International professional mastery contest ‘Chair 2021’ was held at Kaunas technical vocational education centre. Participants from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia took part in the contest.

The aim of a contest is to develop students’ professional skills, strengthen their motivation and help students discover their talent.

The international contest was attended by six students studying carpentry training from various educational institutions: Laurynas Stiklius from Kaunas technical vocational education centre, Dovydas Daugvila from Klaipėda Ernestas Galvanauskas vocational training centre, Markuss Katajs Paeglis from Aizkraukles Profesionālā vidusskola (Latvia), Karl Schumann from Tallinna Ehituskool (Estonia).

The contest started with an introductory meeting where the participants of the contest and the vocational teachers who prepared them for the competition introduced themselves. Later, the participants of the contest performed a practical task: to create a product – a chair from the obtained blanks.

The works of the participants were evaluated according to the evaluation criteria set out in the contest evaluation rules. They were evaluated by the chairman of the commission Gintaras Keturakis, Associate Professor, teaching the technology of production equipment (wood cutting tools, furniture production and wood processing equipment) and furniture production at Kaunas College, Department of industrial engineering and robotics; Kęstutis Cikanas, Wood technology engineer, the head of UAB Mokmedis; Vladas Rutkauskas, Production technician of UAB Geras baldų fabrikas.

The winners of the competition were announced at the closing meeting:

1st place winner – Karl Schumann from Tallinn construction school (Estonia), teacher – Kalle Palts.

2nd place winner – Laurynas Stiklius from Kaunas technical vocational education centre (Lithuania), teacher Jonas Jasinskas.

3rd place winner – Kermo Trahv from Rakvere Ametikool (Estonia), teacher Riho Mäe.

The winners of the contest were awarded great prizes: cordless drill MILWAUKEE M12 BDD-202C, electric jigsaw Makita 4329K, electric impact drill Makita HP1641FJ.

The director of Kaunas technical vocational education centre Paulius Čepas was pleased with this contest and stated that the interest in vocational training in the field of wood still remains, and the students are willing to self-assess their abilities and competencies. It has been a pleasure to get thanks from the Qualifications and vocational education and training development centre for a successful cooperation in disseminating good vocational training experience and organizing a professional mastery contest.
